What are the best credentialing services for nurse practitioners?

NP credentialing has one wrinkle most general listicles skip: in a reduced or restricted practice state, you need a collaborating physician agreement before payer credentialing can even start, a separate problem from the payer paperwork itself. Here is what Modio Health, Credex Healthcare, MedSole RCM and Collaborating Docs each actually do, what they cost, and which problem each one solves.

Most companies that credential nurse practitioners describe their buyer as "providers" generically rather than naming NPs specifically, and only a few publish a price. MedSole RCM has a dedicated nurse practitioner credentialing page and publishes a flat rate around $99 per payer; Modio Health offers a free individual provider record for a solo clinician, with its organization-level OneView platform custom-quoted; Credex Healthcare handles CAQH, primary source verification and insurance panel credentialing for individual providers and small practices, custom quote only. A separate and often-confused problem, the collaborating or supervising physician agreement required in roughly two-thirds of states before an NP can practise many services independently, is handled by a different kind of company, Collaborating Docs, not by a payer-credentialing vendor at all.

Two regulatory facts matter specifically for NPs: the Nurse Licensure Compact covers RNs only, not NPs, so it will not help with multistate practice; and NPs enroll individually in Medicare PECOS using their own NPI, with no organizational barrier, per CMS's own guidance. Telesure is not a credentialing service; it matches you with an independent specialist so you can compare more than one option on scope, timeline and price.

Why doesn't the Nurse Licensure Compact help an NP practise in another state?

Because the Nurse Licensure Compact covers only RNs and LPN/VNs; it does not grant nurse practitioners multistate practice authority, a frequent point of confusion. A separate compact for APRNs exists, enacted by a handful of states as of this cycle, but it is not yet active: it requires seven enacting states before any multistate privilege can be issued, a threshold not yet reached. Check aprncompact.com directly for the current map before assuming it applies to you.

What does payer credentialing actually involve for an NP?

The same CAQH profile, payer-by-payer applications and recredentialing cycle as any other clinician, plus one NP-specific step in reduced and restricted practice states: a collaborating or supervising physician agreement, which most payers require in place before they will credential an NP for services that need one. NPs enroll in Medicare individually through internet-based PECOS using their own NPI and NPPES login, per CMS's own PECOS fact sheet; there is no organizational barrier specific to NPs there.

What is MedSole RCM and who should choose it?

MedSole RCM publishes a dedicated nurse practitioner credentialing page and a flat rate around $99 per payer, the clearest NP-specific pricing found among the vendors checked for this page. Wording on timeline varies slightly across MedSole RCM's own pages (30 to 90 days on one, 45 to 60 on another), so confirm the current estimate directly before relying on it.

Choose MedSole RCM if

You want a published flat per-payer price aimed specifically at NPs rather than a generic "providers" page.

What is Modio Health and who should choose it?

Modio Health offers a free individual Universal Provider Record for a solo clinician, built on the same OneView platform it sells to organizations at a custom-quoted enterprise price. Modio Health is a CHG Healthcare company with a credentialing track record dating to 2014.

Choose Modio Health if

You want a free starting point for your own provider record and might later need the organizational version if you join or build a larger practice.

What is Credex Healthcare and who should choose it?

Credex Healthcare manages CAQH profiles, primary source verification and insurance panel credentialing for individual providers and small practices, with no per-payer price published; pricing is a custom quote.

Choose Credex Healthcare if

You want one vendor handling CAQH maintenance alongside panel credentialing and are comfortable with a quote conversation rather than a published rate.

What is TriZetto Provider Solutions and who should choose it?

TriZetto Provider Solutions markets its credentialing service specifically to newly independent nurse practitioners, handling CAQH setup and ongoing payer follow-up rather than leaving a solo NP to track enrollment status alone. No price is published on TriZetto's own site; a $6,600-per-day figure on one of its marketing pages describes the cost of incomplete credentialing, a claim about the risk of delay, not a service price.

Choose TriZetto Provider Solutions if

You are newly independent and want a vendor that explicitly builds for that transition rather than a generic multi-specialty credentialing shop.

What is Collaborating Docs, and why is it a different problem?

Collaborating Docs matches an NP with a required collaborating or supervising physician in states where the law requires one, a prerequisite that sits before payer credentialing, not a substitute for it. Roughly two-thirds of states fall into AANP's "reduced" or "restricted" practice categories, each requiring some form of ongoing physician collaboration or supervision; a credentialing vendor from the table above cannot substitute for this agreement if your state requires one. Check AANP's own State Practice Environment map for your state's current category before assuming either way.

Do not confuse a collaborating-physician match with payer credentialing. They solve different problems and, in a restricted-practice state, you may need both: a collaborating agreement first, then the usual CAQH and payer-by-payer credentialing process once that agreement is in place.

Where does Telesure fit?

Telesure is not a credentialing service; it matches you with an independent licensing or credentialing specialist so you can compare scope, timeline and price before committing to anyone, including any of the vendors above. An independent specialist works under your own name and can also help you understand whether your state requires a collaborating-physician agreement before credentialing begins.

Start with your state's practice category, not the vendor list. If AANP classifies your state as reduced or restricted practice, resolve the collaborating-physician question first; only then does choosing between MedSole RCM, Credex Healthcare, Modio Health or an independent specialist become the relevant decision.
